Pan Cakes Are Classic Family Fun

When it comes to breakfast time, there are plenty of choices. As people become more familiar with exotic cuisines, their tastes and palette expands and so does the menu. Of course, that doesn't mean that they still don't revert right back to the American classic of pan cakes, eggs and sausage.

In fact, go into any restaurant serving breakfast and you can absolutely expect to see this offering on every single menu. While it's true that you may enjoy trying new things, American pancakes are a comfort food that you come back to again and again, and for good reason. If you've even dealt with feeding children, you know just how frustrating it can be. If it's not familiar, they will turn their noses up at the breakfast fare. In fact, most picky children will choose to go hungry rather than expand their comfort zone when it comes to food.

Luckily, everyone is a fan of pan cakes. They are everyday, simple food and perfect for children. Actually, kids love to watch the made to order process that goes into making pancakes. Or, try waffles for a change of pace. If you have a cast iron waffle or Cuisinart waffle maker, there's just something magic about watching batter dropped, seeing the lid shut and then having a crisp holey pastry appear in it's place. What's not to love? Once you find a recipe that you prefer, it's time to change things up a bit.

Pan cakes are the perfect vehicle for adding and tweaking for breakfast fun. The first thing you'll probably discover is that you can add any sort of fruit right to the batter itself. Try peaches in the summer or apples and pears in the fall. Berries are also a nice addition. Make sure your pan is well seasoned and hot before dropping the batter, as the extra sugar can cause more sticking than usual. Also, don't forget to try crepes. While a crepes recipe may put you off, it's really no more complicated than a normal pancake.

Use a well-seasoned nonstick pan, dropping the batter on when the pan is well heated. A crepe is really nothing more than a very thin pancake, so give it a try. Breakfast is an ideal time to not only start your day off on the right foot nutritionally, but also to spend quality time with your family.

Everybody loves good pan cakes, so choosing this staple breakfast food is a perfect choice. Try using whole grain flour and making additions like fruits, nuts and chocolate. With so many options, there will be something to please everybody.
