Homemade Pancakes

Pancakes Ever go to a store and find pancake mixes with all kinds of ingredients you've never heard of? You'd be shocked if you actually read up on some of the junk they've added to the mix. Whatever happened to old-fashioned homemade pancakes? They're really not that difficult to make and use natural ingredients from your cabinet and refrigerator that are much healthier than a ready-made mix. Homemade pancakes can be most any type.

The fun part about making homemade pancakes is that you can get as creative as you want and even make it a fun family time with the children or even just you and your spouse. You can experiment with several types of fruit, grains and flour. Since most recipes call for a small amount of sugar, you may even want to experiment with brown sugar or raw sugar instead of refined white sugar.

Homemade pancakes come in different forms. There are English pancakes that are similar to a French crepes but don't look as ornamental. Scotch pancakes are very much like crumpets and German pancakes resemble English pancakes. Then you have the American pancake. Americans have taken the pancake and gotten quite creative. Adding different ingredients to this breakfast delight creating buttermilk pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, oatmeal pancakes and the list goes on and on.

Depending on the region in which you live, your family would grow accustom to eating a particular type of American pancake. The basic ingredients for homemade pancakes are eggs, flour and milk. Then depending on whether you are cooking, English, Scotch, American or German pancakes, you may or may not add sugar and some sort of raising agent. Homemade American pancake mix can also be used in a waffle maker for waffles.

Homemade pancakes can be a great way for a child who is just learning to cook, to accomplish their first cooking assignment with relative ease. The recipes are simple and there are very few steps once the batter is mixed. Homemade pancakes are also great for creative expression. As mentioned before, trying different ingredients allow a child's imagination to explore how different tastes blend.

If you're making American pancakes, the dough has just enough thickness to make fun shapes as well. Enjoy some family time in the kitchen with this delicious treat.
